Me and my Silver Surfer!

Monday, July 09, 2007

Just for laughs.....We just got a collection of Dells, Charltons, and Archies from the 50's, 60's and 70's and here is some of the advertising inside!

From Blondie vol 4 #194 an early ad with uncredited Arnold Schwarzenegger appearance. "Your manhood and virility "comes alive" and across swiftly to women-they instantly sense your sexual power and want to be in your arms!"

Oh my.

Not enough? Try this Life-Size Inflatable doll, this ad appears in Tiger vol 1 #4, 1970! " Hi I'm Judy, the Life-Size inflatable London doll made with startling detail....Just add air and instantly I become a 5'4" beauty who wears size 8 clothes. Take me along, or to a party, boating or swimming (I float)....Your (sic) bound to find hundreds of exciting and unusual uses for me."

I bet.

Not sexy enough, how about some violence! I found this ad in Archie vol 1 # 103, 1959. An "Exploding Army Hand Grenade, Exact Replica, only $1.00......It's completely harmless, but the explosion it makes can be heard for a block. Really scatters the gang when you throw this baby in their midst."

Uh huh.

Or this from SwampThing vol 2 #6, 1973, back cover. "Getting A Daisy BB Gun is like getting a good grade. You have to work for it....what kind of boy is ready for his Daisy? You can telll by the way he handles other things. Like school work, and jobs around the house. He knows how to take serious things seriously....Daisy since 1886, The BB Gun every boy dreams about. "

Seriously.

Something to Get Excited about!!

I've been turned off by many products from the big two recently, but this news, I just got to share.
Gail Simone one of DC's best writers is leaving one of my favorite comics Birds of Prey, and while that is sad news for me, the reason why is worth it......

Gail Simone is going to be writing Wonder Woman!!!

This is great news, as I loved the Greg Rucka run on Wonder Woman, and was greatly disappointed with the writing done by Allan Heinberg, (not too mention the crazy amount of delays on it) But this may just shoot this book back to being my favorite ongoing comic

Gail Simone starts with issue #13, which is after the two tie ins to Amazons Attack.
An artist has yet to be named for her run.

Free Comic Book Day - Saturday, May 5th, 2007
Yes! It's that time of year again! Free Comic Book Day, an annual event that happens the first Saturday in May!

For those who don't know what this fantastic event is about, a brief summary: FCBD is a North America wide event where comic book stores get together with publishers and distributors to give away comic books. Specially printed books by dozens of publishers are made just for this event. It is an effort to bring back the fun in reading and collecting comic books. This idea was the brain child of Joe Field of Flying Colors Comics, who managed to bring the idea to Diamond Comic Distributors, and then eventually the major publishers Marvel and DC. The idea was well received by retailers and fans, where ever it was brought up for discussion. The first Saturday in May, 2002, was chosen for the inaugural launch and it was a resounding success!

We haven't looked back since! Here in London, Ontario, L.A. Mood Comics & Games makes it an even better event by teaming up with 4 other stores in town for an exclusive Comic Shop Crossover!!!! Pick up a passport at any of the 5 participating stores, and get your passport stamped at each of the 5 participating stores, drop it off at the last store, and you will have a chance to win one of many prizes donated by those awesome stores!!! Free comics! Prizes! Sales! I heard a rumour that Superman will put in an appearance at L.A. Mood's between 11 and 3!!! Awesome!

Passports are
now available at the following stores:

L.A. Mood Comics & Games, 350 Richmond St.
Heroes, 179 Dundas St.
The Comic Book Collector, 610 Dundas St.
Neo Tokyo: The Anime Store, 610 Dundas St.
Worlds Away, 666 Dundas St.

You can check out photos from past Free Comic Book Days at L.A. Mood's, by clicking on one of the photos in the flikr badge in the sidebar or here. We also have this awesome countdown clock counting down the days, hours and minutes to Free Comic Book Day! You can also check out this website that is dedicated to all things FCBD at www.freecomicbookday.com. If you have enjoyed FCBD or Comic Shop Crossover in the past, please feel free to leave a comment about what a great time you had, so we can pass this message on to others, and definitely send your friends a link to this page, so they can know about FCBD, too!

Civil War is Over, But what did it Accomplish?

After reading both Civil War #7 (and many reviews of it) and Civil War Frontline #11, like most people I left with something less than a great feeling. For all their talk of starting a brand period in the Marvel universe, I can't help but think that all they did was just setup the next set of crossover books (see House of M and it's follow up titles Decimation for example). I don't feel excited at the new bunch of titles or this new status quo. If anything I felt they have damaged their characters more than anything, in Captain America (who they've effectively neutered), Iron Man (whose has become the greatest jackass in the MU and for being a poster boy for the ends justify the means) and Mr Fantastic and the Invisible Woman (for them just being horribly written out of character and for whose actions are just stupid). I also love the fact how populace of the MU is split on the registration act to start with but somewhere between Civil War Frontline #10 & 11 & Civil war #7, became united behind it. or that NOW all of a sudden they have become concerned about the collateral damage from superpower battles. Same with Speedball whose feelings and opinions changed magically as well between Frontline #9 & 10.

And that is probably the worst criticism of both series is that too much happens to these characters that we are not seeing, and while the editors at try to justify the character actions on internet websites. Maybe they should made sure that it came across in the reading experience itself.

In the end even thought Civil War was huge financial win fall for Marvel, when read with anything of a critical perspective, it's pretty much a mindless action flick with characters lurching wildly around with no real purpose.

For something a little more the fun side I give you

Civil War in 30 Seconds!! enjoy

Release Party!

Join us at the store on Saturday, February 3, 2007 between 1PM and 4:30 PM, to celebrate the release of D.S. Barrick's Skulsi Thatcher, his new, hand-bound hardcover collection of comic strips! Did I say hand-bound hardcover? Yes indeed! Daniel told me he's sewing/gluing this book together by hand! Guaranteed to be a work of art!

Here at L.A. Mood's we've known Daniel, since he was a talented artist in highschool. He showed much promise with his first self-published comic book The Day I Wrote Watermelon. There were more people down for his title on our membership list than some DC titles at the time, including easily recognized icons such as Wonder Woman and Aquaman! Unfortunately, for his following, Daniel's pursuit of a university degree in the Arts interfered with publishing a regular small press comic. He still is at school, working hard to become a highschool teacher of Art and English, but his efforts in university are paying off for us fans, with a creation of new characters, Skulsi Thatcher and her friends. This esoteric collection of strips, follows Skulsi and her friends around as they make unimportant observations of life. I asked Daniel how he would describe his comic and he replied, "Stealing from Seinfeld, it is a comic about nothing."

Well, I call it art! Daniel will be available between 1 and 4:30 PM, Saturday, February 3rd at the store to sign copies of his book, he might even be persuaded to make a free sketch or two! See you there!

Horroclix AVP Queen Info

Hey there LA Mood Horrorclix Customers, thought I'd give you guys the heads up on the AVP Queen coming in late Feb. The following information is cut & pasted from the Wizkids forums, posted by Horrorclix & Heroclix brand manager Mark Tuttle

"The Alien Queen herself sits on the 3" "titan" base. That's the same one that we used for the HeroClix Sentinel dial. The egg sac sits on the colossal dial that Cthulhu used. As for the size of the queen, she is in scale with the Alien and Predator figures. Consider that if an Alien is 8-9' tall, the Queen is 14'. "

The HorrorClix: AVP Alien Queen contains three (3) figures:

1 - Alien Queen with egg sac diorama
1 - Alien
1 - Predator

Speaking of old friends...

Just heard from Joe; Joe used to help us out at the Fraser Mall and on Dundas Street with the "joe" jobs! He used to buy lots of model kits from us, back in the day. We used to display some of his finished kits in the store: 'Mars Attacks', 'Aliens',. He even did up a Ghost Rider kit that someone liked so much they smashed our window on Dundas Street to steal it in the middle of the night! He moved to Edmonton to get work welding. Well, he's given up the"joe" jobs and is using his welding skills to make metal sculptures. I would describe his work as HR Giger-esque with a little bit of Tim Burton. You can visit his website here, if you dare!

Congratulations to Roy!

Nothing like the holidays to hear from old friends or old employees. Some of you might remember Rodrigo, (Roy!) who worked at L.A. Mood's a few years back. He also self published his own comic called The Sublimes. It seems he participated in the 24 Hour Comic Challenge 2006 in October, and his entry was chosen to be one published in the book. This book will be coming out in March and will be advertised in January 2007 Previews. L.A. Mood Comics & Games will be carrying this book and anyone who would like to pre-order it, please let us know before the end of January. You can visit Rodrigo at his blog here.

First snowstorm of the year shuts down London!!!

London transit did not operate at all and people were forced to walk on the streets as they waited for sidewalks to be plowed.

Machine wins over man in snow removal!

We're open! Take that old man winter!!!

Friday Night Magic Cancelled!

Sorry folks, but FNM is cancelled due to the snowstorm. Since the London Transit is shut down for today, Johnathon can't make it in. So the Draft will be next Friday instead, December 15th.

In the mean time, L.A. Mood's is still open, but will probably close early instead of at 8PM today. City Lights and Forest City Coin are also open right now. But it is best to call ahead to make sure before venturing out today. Shoppers Drug Mart is open, but the Scotiabank and the Market is closed. The sidewalks are plowed on Richmond from York to Dundas but not north of Dundas. The streets are looking better, but drivers watch out for pedestrians; many are walking on the street because not all the sidewalks are done yet.

Take care out there and happy snow day!
The Weather outside is Frightfull

Due to the MASSIVE snow fall, FNM will be canceled this week, I will instead hold the draft Next week. Sorry for any inconvience.

Johnathon D. Merrow

Merry Christmas from all the staff of L.A.Mood's!!!!

We are not looking forward to our annual inventory! So to make our job easier we've decided to mark down the prices NOW of some of the older stuff gathering dust in the corners! Get rid of them now, so we don't have to count them! We marked down trade-paperbacks, and that includes manga, D20 games, toys (Buffy, DC Direct, NBA to name a few), and board games (someone bought 6 games an hour after it had been discounted!) There are some really good deals for the smart shopper!

Also currently we have a 20% off sale on all back issues, 25%off all in stock DVD's and 50% off all manga (not including pre-orders).

Don't forget our final 15th Anniversary Sale! What crazy things do we have planned for December 15th? Well, I am not going to tell you yet ;) You will just have to stay tuned to this blog!!!

FNM This Week

In second came Team Worlds Away, with some Impressive Victories form players the likes of Wojo, and Mark. But alas, Team L.A. Moods came in Last with a "good Try team".

Hopefully this is the First of may crossover Tournaments to come.

THIS FRIDAY DEC 8th

This Week we have a Draft! Yay Draft. Hopefully we have as good of a turnout as we did last week. 18 players last week, Hopefully this week will be the same.

Next week we will have Standard Play on Dec 15th. This will be the Last FNM till the New Year. Next Week I will have the List for Januarys Events. Thanks All, and Merry Ho Ho.

Marvel's Editoral & Business Sense??

Those who are regulars at the store and talk comics with me, know that I sometimes have very concerned thoughts about Marvel's editoral and Business sense as of the last year or so.

well in this review of X-Men Phoenix Warsong #3 at the X-Axis website, kinda sums up how I feel. Click on the link Here

Let me know your thoughts either in the comments section or at the store.

FNM AND ITS CRAZYNESS!!

Timespirl saw its first standard in the underground this week with some surprising turnout. Lots of good deck saw play, but combo seemed to dominate the night as Paul Dobbs came out with a 4 - 0 win for first place, Leaving Larry and I in his trails.

As for right now, I'm still waiting to see if the DCI will get back to me with sanctioning info for november. Regardless of what happens, we are going to play another attack of Standard for the first FNM of November. So bring your decks and prepare for a big beat down!

Friday Night Magic: GOODBYE KAMIGAWA!

This week was the final type 2 tourny with the Infamous KAMIGAWA BLOCK. That means no more jittes or Kokusho's or even Heartbeat. YAY ! Nows the time to make way for Time Spiral. Already the forums are buzzing with activity try to peice together the Next Big Standard Deck. So far I think combo will be the way to go. Easy to pull off combos with Enduring Renewal, Wild Cantor and Grapeshot have already shown me a thing or two. Although Agrro may just get the boost it needs to be a major contendor. All will be revealed soon. This week we have a Sealed Event. That means 1 Tournament Pack of Time Spiral, and 2 boosters of any Type 2 you want. Why do i say any. Well seeing as it is the first time Time Spiral will be played in type 2, I thought it might be a great idea to let players see what works best with Time Spiral. As for me, I'll be playing Stright Time Spiral, "Gotta get those Blooms!"

Friday Night Magic !! and Timespiral !!

The Oct 6th Friday Night Magic saw the first Draft of the new set Timespiral, and WOW was ever a draft. Almost none of the players had seen any of the cards before they cracked their first booster, which made for a very intresting event. With timespiral becoming legal as of the 20th of october, the draft was a peek into the future to come. With power cards like Magus of the Disk and Ancestral Visions, Timespiral is sure to shake up Standard play like no set has in years. The Timeshifted cards may be as powerful in Standard as the new set itself. With the printing of Bad Moon and Undead Warchief, you can be sure to see the return of Mono-Black decks.
Speaking of October 20th, We have a Sealed Deck tourny for our FNM. This will Include Timespiral. In fact the by in will be 1 Tournament pack of Timespiral and 2 boosters of your choice from the Ravnica Block.
As for next Friday, Its Standard. So show up and play for a chance to win a FNM Arrogant Wurm!
HorroClix League Winner gets Convention Exclusive Cthulhu

Our Zombie Master Steve Nyenhuis, in co-operation with L.A. Moods Comics & Games, is going to award the convention Exclusive Cthulhu to the best Horroclix player. How does one beco
me the best Horroclix player you ask? All games from October till December 14th will be treated as a league, with everyone's point totals being tallied till Dec. 14th. The player with the most points wins The Mighty & Terrible Cthulhu. If that wasn't enough excitement, the Game on the 14th of Dec. is a battle against Cthuthlu! The damage being done him counts toward your point total for the end of the league.

Hope to see all you Horroclix players out there

Dr Who Day at L.A. Mood's

On September 16, L.A. Mood's and the Brethren from Time and Space were happy to host a Dr Who Fan appreciation day.

Fans brought in some of their favourite memorabilia and were able to watch some new and old episodes as well as a documentary, 30 Years in the Tardis.

Here at L.A. Mood's we've seen a warm reception to the latest Dr Who and people are anxious to see the latest season. I've seen some argue that Dr Who is better than Star Trek! Imagine that...maybe Firefly is better than Star Trek...but Dr Who...I am not so sure. (We welcome your comments :)

Display of Dr Who stuff, featuring some really cool Daleks and a Tardis made from Lego!
