Announcing: The Mirrodin Besieged Prerelease!

Hello to all our Magic Players!

As you know, the Mirrodin Besieged Prerelease is fast approaching - and there are some important details that make this a Prerelease unlike any you've attended before!

Our Prerelease will begin at 11:00 on Sunday, January the 30th - but try to arrive by 10:30 in order to help keep the event running smoothly. As always, the event is Sealed Deck, however, when you arrive for your packs you'll have to declare your faction - either Mirran or Phyrexian. Mirran players will receive 3 "Mirran-aligned" booster packs, containing only the Mirran-aligned cards from the set, as well as 3 Scars of Mirrodin boosters and 1 copy of the Promotional Hero of Bladehold. Phyrexian players will receive 3 "Phyrexian-aligned" boosters, containing only the Phyrexian-aligned cards from the set, as well as 3 Scars of Mirrodin boosters and 1 copy of the Promotional Glissa, the Traitor. The promotional cards are yours to keep, but you can't play with them during the event!

The cost of the packs will be $28. If you feel strongly about which faction you'd like to declare for, be sure to let me know but January 28th, so I can set your faction pack aside! All over faction packs will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.

In order to avoid confusion, I have decided on the following tournament organization rules:

1) There will not be submitted deck lists. Players will operate on the "honor system" regarding sideboarding in between events.

2) There will be deck logging - another player will open your packs and list the cards inside. However, unlike previous prereleases, there will not be pack swapping - the packs you purchased are the packs you will be playing with - you just won't be the one to open them!

Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

An Important Update for Pauper Sundays!

Hello, Pauper players!

As you know, this Sunday, January 9th, is our inaugural Pauper event at L.A. Mood. I'm very excited to have everyone come out and show off their creativity in this uniquely restricted Magic format.

However, based on several discussions with excellent, experienced players of Pauper both online and offline, I have come to the decision to expand the list of banned cards for our L.A. tournament. The official ban list (found here) will be updated to include the following cards. In addition to Cranial Plating, and the existing Legacy ban list:

- Tree of Tales is banned.
- Great Furnace is banned.
- Vault of Whispers is banned.
- Seat of the Synod is banned.
- Ancient Den is banned.

This ban list is intended to reduce the extremely consistent, aggressive explosiveness of the Affinity deck in Pauper, without eliminating its ability to function as an aggro deck.

Paper Pauper is a living format with many variant ban lists. In order to keep our L.A. tournaments fun, exciting, and varied experiences, I will be updating our store's ban list as the year goes on - sometimes adding, sometimes removing. Be on the lookout for an official flyer with out official ban list in the near future!

Sad news, everyone.

Unfortunately, due to an oversight on my part, I was unable to secure this month's FNM Promo shipment for L.A. Mood. I know many of you were very excited about the Everflowing Chalice, and I sincerely apologize. I've already taken steps to ensure this won't happen again.

By way of apology, I have undertaken the following changes to this month's FNM prize structure:

1) First and Second Place, in addition to their customary Booster pack, will also recieve a foil promotional Nissa Revane, first distributed to Xbox players who purchased Duels of the Planeswalkers!

2) Third and fourth place will be guaranteed an FNM promo foil from past months as opposed to the customary inclusion in the door prize selection. In addition, third and fourth place can elect to replace their section of an FNM promo foil and instead receive an "IOU" for a foil promotional Liliana Vess, which becomes eligible for store distribution on March 31st!

3) All-new, exciting and surprising door prizes and handouts! Come on out to find out what these are!

4) Finally, the customary nominal cost for the first pop or snack will be waived for each FNM participant for this month.

I hope this covers everyone's concerns. As always, you can e-mail questions and comments to lamoodmagic@gmail.com

Possible Change in Event Scheduling - a Poll!

Hello, Magic Players!

For this upcoming year, I'm considering making a change in the schedule of our events: from Tuesday night drafting to Monday night drafting. The time would remain the same, 6:15.

This is definitely a departure from the established schedule! I've considered many factors up until this point, but the last piece of information I need comes from you, the players! What do you think of the proposed change? Let me know at lamoodmagic@gmail.com

Another New Magic: The Gathering Event!

I'm very pleased to announce the start of a brand-new event for L.A. Mood Magic Players: Sunday Afternoon Legacy Pauper!

Legacy Pauper is a format designed for players who are sick of trying to get four copies of the latest and greatest and most expensive Mythic Rares out there. Your 60-card deck (and 15-card sideboard) must contain Common cards and only Common cards - and better yet, Common cards from all of Magic's sets are allowed!

Legacy Pauper Decks are built just the same as any other 60-card deck with a 15-card sideboard; four copies of any card maximum, with the exception of basic lands. Pauper is a great format for players with every size collection - since we all usually have more commons than we know what to do with. A full explanation of the Pauper format (plus the banlist) can be found here: http://www.wizards.com/magic/tcg/resources.aspx?x=magic/rules/pauper.

If you don't know if a card is a common or not (since many older cards were printed before the red/gold/silver/black rarity symbols), a quick check in Gatherer (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Default.aspx) will tell you if it was ever a Common at any point in its history.

Sunday Afternoon Pauper runs every Sunday, starting January the 9th, at 12:30 p.m., and runs alongside our Elder Dragon Highlander Events - you can participate in either every Sunday. FNM Prize foils available to the top placements and the more participation, the more prizes there will be!

New Magic: The Gathering Event!

I'm very pleased to announce the start of a brand-new event for L.A. Mood Magic Players: Sunday Afternoon Elder Dragon Highlander.

Elder Dragon Highlander (or EDH) is a fabulous casual format for players looking to make use of the cards they have in their collections that are fun to play, but don't quite cut it in today's modern decks. It's a format that wants you to play big, splashy, expensive sorceries and creatures for some wild fun you just can't get anywhere else in Magic!

Elder Dragon Decks are built around a General, a Legendary Creature whose colors define the kind of mana and colors of spells your deck contains. EDH decks consist of 100 cards, one of which is the General, and no two cards can have the same English name (with the exception of the five basic lands). A full explanation of the format can be found at http://mtgcommander.net/rules.php.

Elder Dragon Highlander will be a fully supported format in 2011 with the release of the Commander boxed set from Wizards of the Coast! Get in on the ground floor and start crafting your winning strategies and devastating decks!

Sunday Afternoon Elder Dragon Highlander runs every Sunday, starting January the 9th, at 12:30 p.m., and runs alongside our Pauper Events - you can participate in either every Sunday. FNM Prize foils available to the top placements and the more participation, the more prizes there will be!
