Carol's pick: Jeff Lemire's Sweet Tooth #1 only $1.00!

Poor Gus is one of the last kids left born after the "accident". His Dad says God decided to make them special, so these kids were born with fur, tails or antlers. But not everyone thinks they're special, beware the hunters! Lemire describes his tale as a "post-apocalyptic, neo-western, action-adventure, science-fiction, road-movie hybrid." I would call it a sweet, gripping, haunting tale.

Check out Lemire's Sweet Tooth blog and take advantage of his limited offer:

Send Jeff your copy (or copies) of Sweet Tooth #1 along with a self addressed return envelope. He will sign the book(s) and return it along with an head sketch of a Sweet Tooth character! You will get a sketch for each copy sent, (so if you send 2 copies, you get 2 sketches back, 6 copies=6 sketches, Maximum 6 per reader). Jeff lives in Toronto! So not too far at all....

Jeff has received critical acclaim for his Essex County trilogy, and The Nobody.

Tuesday, September 29th: Draft (M10)
6:30pm Start

Many of you will notice that I have added a day to the regular Magic schedule. Every Sunday, we will be hosting either open play or a scheduled tournament. I want to give our players a chance to explore other variations of Magic play, from multi-player formats to Elder Dragon Highlander, and also open up another day that players can come in to pursue the singles they are looking for to finish their decks. This Sunday will be a great chance for some of our players to explore the new Planechase mechanics with Planechase available for sale this Friday.

Next, the L.A. Mood Killers team search tournament series has been put on hold for the time being. There has not been enough interest to warrant running them at this time. I will however be handpicking team members from our regular tournament attendees and trying to develop a team from there. Congratulations to Jerry Masse, our first member to join the team by winning the team search tournament held last month.

Finally, we will be holding a Zendikar prerelease tournament on Sunday, September 27th. The format is sealed deck with 6 booster packs of Zendikar to build your decks with. The cost is $25.00 to play. Stay tuned for the Zendikar prerelease card to be given away to prerelease attendees. Once the card is announced I will post it here.

Thanks for tuning in this month folks, I hope to see you at our Magic events.

M10 Crisis!

This update is for our Magic players. We are currently experiencing a shortage of M10 boosters. Our expected shipments of M10 have been delayed and we are currently out of stock. This means that until M10 starts rolling in again, our scheduled M10 drafts will instead be Shards/Conflux/Alara Reborn. Hopefully the shortage will be over soon, and we can all get back to collecting duals and trying to crack those Baneslayers.

Tuesday, August 25: Booster Draft (M10) @ 6:30 pm
Friday, August 28: FNM (Booster Draft with M10) @ 6:00 pm

Players attending our FNM tournaments this month will have a chance to win a foil version of Lightning Greaves. These incredible boots of speed are enough to make even The Flash jealous.

As most of you are now aware, prizes for drafting at L.A. Mood are awarded by rare redraft. If you win first place in the draft, you will be rewarded by selecting first any rare card opened during the draft. Second place picks second and so on until all the players have made their first picks, resuming from the top down again until all the rares have been drafted.

Next up, The L.A. Mood Killers Team Search Tournament Series (#1) will be held on Sunday, August 23'rd. We are looking to put together a team of skilled magic players to represent the L.A. Mood magic scene when our team brings it's game to local, national, and global venues. This will be the first of four team search tournaments culminating with a finalized team roster to be announced on December 1'st, 2009. We are looking for team members who are passionate about the game and are willing to contribute their time to developing a well rounded team. Team members will test, share ideas, and provide feedback with each other in an effort to achieve the following three goals:

Succeed - We want our team members to achieve their own personal goals of winning consistently. We do not condone cheating or unsportsmanlike conduct however, and any such behaviour may result in expulsion from the team.

Represent - We want our team to be recognized and respected at tournament venues for play skill as well as demeanor. While representing the L.A. Mood Killers, we expect our members to act maturely. Win with style, lose with grace.

Grow - We are looking to develop a team of players that strive to play at a professional level. With regular testing and communication between members, we are confident in our team members achieving this caliber of play.

Without further ado, here are the details:

The L.A. Mood Killers Team Search Tournament Series (#1)

Meet the Graphic Novel Group!

Our first meeting was a success! Attendance was 8 people, including myself. Don't worry if you couldn't make it, the GNG's doors are always open and you can join any time on Facebook!

Our first meeting began with introductions and sharing our graphic novel picks. We decided that we definitely wanted to meet in person on a regular basis and the 2nd Saturday of each was chosen. Having said that, we know that Saturdays are not convenient to everyone and in order to allow as much participation as possible, we would have an on-line component. We decided that Facebook allows us an easy forum for discussion and all of us, and many of our customers, are already on it. Tom volunteered to start up the page and it is ready to go, just search LA Mood Graphic Novel Group. After a discussion of our favourite graphic novels, Watchmen and Maus came up more than once! We thought we could postpone Watchmen until the release of the DVD and then we could combine movie and book discussion, so Art Spiegelman's Complete Maus was chosen as our first book.

Currently, we have volume II in stock and we will be getting more in. It will be our featured graphic novel in the store and will be availbable for 25% off!

L.A. Mood's invites you to meet comic artists and creators:
Diana Tamblyn and Willow Dawson
Saturday, May 30, 12-4 PM at the store.

Diana is an Ignatz-nominated cartoonist and illustrator living here in London. She has written several mini comics such as The Rosie Stories and Duty Must Be Done: The Story of Frederick Banting. She is currently working on a full length graphic novel From Earth to Babylon: The Story of Gerald Bull and the Supergun. The first chapter of the book, The Paris Guns, is now available as a mini comic and she will have some on hand. I find her historical biographies to be reminiscent of Chester Brown's Louis Riel. Diana was also pleased to be chosen for the 2009 London Artists' Studio Tour at the beginning of May and her work was on the cover of the April 2009 issue of ArtScape. As well as her comics, she will have original art, t-shirts, and buttons available! You can check out a Q&A with the National Post here.

Willow, who is originally from BC, lived here in London for a brief period, working for us at L.A. Mood's! (We like to think we had a positive influence in her journey as illustrator in the comics industry.) Willow is currently working on a semi-autobiographical web comic called 100 Mile House.

She is also the illustrator of the graphic novel No Girls Allowed: Tales of Daring Women Dressed as Men for Love, Freedom and Adventure, published by Kids Can Press written by Susan Hughes and Violet Miranda: Girl Pirate with Emily Pohl-Weary. You can view a video of No Girls Allowed here.

You can visit Willow's web page here. As well as her comics, Willow will have original art, buttons, and t-shirts for sale! You can check out a Q&A with the National Post here.

Both ladies will be happy to sign their work and talk about the comics biz and their experiences getting started in this male dominated industry.

Scenes from a Free Comic Book Day...

It always starts out like this: lots of comics in nice neat piles!

Then you have a line up waiting to get in!

Shuffle in!
Shuffle out!

Then add a little FM96 and a dash of Taz!

Then the great costumes!

"Ew what's in there?!"

And the taunting: "You are a bad guy!"

Super heroes come in all ages!

And all walks of life!

Best Free Comic Book Day Ever!
L.A. Mood wants to thank FM96 and Taz for the great job helping us promote the event. Also a great big thanks to our volunteers Adam and Sarah, as well as loyal employees Tom and Luke!!!
